Points 101 (super quick)
“Points” are rewards you earn from purchases; you can redeem them for travel, statement credits, or partner transfers. Programs value points differently, but a quick rule of thumb is ~1 cent per point for simple redemptions (sometimes more when transferring to airline/hotel partners). To use: earn points on your card, then redeem through the issuer’s portal or transfer to partners for flights/hotels when it makes sense. If your credit is rebuilding, start there first and revisit points cards later.
Tap a card name in the table to jump to its tile. We’ve ordered these roughly from more accessible profiles to more premium; approval always depends on your full credit profile.

How points work (deeper)
Each issuer has a points currency (e.g., Capital One Miles, Membership Rewards®). You’ll earn points from purchases; some categories earn faster. You can redeem for travel through the issuer portal (often ~1¢/point) or transfer to airline/hotel partners where value can be higher if you find good award availability. Track offer terms and any transfer ratios, and always compare cash prices vs. points to make sure you’re getting solid value.
How to check your credit score
- Bank & card apps: Many issuers show your FICO® or VantageScore® for free.
- Monitoring tools: Reputable services can track changes and alerts.
- Annual reports: Get free reports at AnnualCreditReport.com. Reviewing reports won’t hurt your score.
- Build faster: Pay on time, keep balances low vs. limits (utilization), avoid unnecessary hard inquiries, and keep older accounts open when it makes sense.
